The Super Bowl on ABS-CBN

FINALLY, the Super Bowl has a Philippine TV carrier.

ABS-CBN has acquired the Philippine TV rights to the world's most-watched football game which will be played on Sunday, February 5 (Monday, February 6 in Manila).

The match will be shown over ABS-CBN's sports channel Sports+Action Channel 23 starting at 7:30 am followed by a delayed broadcast of the NBA games at 11:30 am.

ABS-CBN's move of airing the Super Bowl comes at a time when the channel has been receiving a lot of praise for airing a lot of sports events like the NBA, UAAP, NCAA, ASEAN Basketball League, Shakey's V League, Top Rank Boxing and Philippine Azkals football.

It is also a big step for the network in its battle for sports ratings supremacy in the Philippines against TV5, which holds the rights to the PBA, Olympics, FIBA, Philippine Super Liga and UFC.

TV5 aired three of the last four Super Bowls but the Manny Pangilinan-owned network bypassed this year because its head Chot Reyes obviously favored airing Japanese anime cartoons on the Super Bowl time slot.

And since the Super Bowl has a lot of commercials in the US, I wonder if ABS-CBN will also air a lot of ads when it televises the game between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons.

This is where televiewers notice the differences between ABS-CBN and TV5 when it comes to sports broadcasting. The old Studio 23 used to air a lot of NFL games in the past and putting up S+A made a lot of sense because it has the free airtime available to air sports coverages all day long.

In contrast, TV5 has other shows on primetime like the Tagalog-dubbed foreign movies, American TV shows and Japanese animes, aside from its newscasts which makes the station look more like a carbon copy of ABS-CBN Channel 2 and GMA 7 which has their own primetime teleseryes.

TV5's sister channel Aksyon TV is also confusing. Its programming is a mixture of sports, news and TV shopping. This channel airs the PBA D League a day late and when there is no sports coverage, it simulcasts with its sister radio station Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM with the programs of Orly Mercado, Cristy Fermin, Luchi Cruz-Valdes and the Tulfo brothers.

Even the PBA games on TV5 aren't getting enough attention because of the station's confusing programming. It's sad considering the long years I spent as a PBA sportswriter back in Manila. I will touch on some of the PBA's problems in a future post.

For now, let's enjoy the Super Bowl on Monday morning over there in Manila and chalk this as another feather in ABS-CBN's cap.
