The NFL on Philippine TV

THE National Football League will finally have a Philippine TV carrier this season.

A day ago, TV5 announced in its social media sites that it will air one NFL game every Monday, Tuesday and Friday live at 8 am with replays over its sister cable channel Hyper for Cignal subscribers.

NFL games have been irregularly televised in the Philippines because obviously, many Pinoys don't understand the rules of American football.

Previously, ABS-CBN tried airing the NFL on its defunct Studio 23 but the games didn't catch on with many viewers.

And now, TV5 is gambling on the NFL as it tries to keep pace with ABS-CBN's Sports+Action 23 which airs the NBA, UAAP and NCAA games.

Under TV5's schedule, the following NFL games will be televised:

Monday mornings (Sunday Night Football on NBC)
Tuesday mornings (Monday Night Football on ESPN)
Friday mornings (Thursday Night Football on NFL Network)

The Sunday morning, US time, games will not be televised on TV5 since they're aired in the early hours of Monday in the Philippines and most Pinoys are asleep.

TV5 hopes that the NFL will lure viewers to watch the station which also boasts of other sports coverages such as the PBA, UFC, Philippine Super Liga, Olympics and FIBA basketball.

Recently, TV5 acquired the rights to air the games of the Philippine Azkals football team which ABS-CBN held on for many years.

Interestingly, TV5's last NFL game was its telecast of the Super Bowl in 2014. The 2015 game wasn't shown on Philippine TV while the last Super Bowl in Houston was aired on S+A.

TV5 surely needs a sport like the NFL to gain a higher profile since it has been the target of a lot of criticisms lately such as a declining news desk, laying off several employees and the abolishing of its entertainment department after it tried but failed to imitate the primetime soap operas of rival networks ABS-CBN and GMA 7.

TV5 also has been criticized for dubbing English movies and TV shows into Tagalog, a practice that GMA is also doing.

Will the Philippine TV public patronize the NFL on TV5? This season should be a test for Chot Reyes and his embattled network.
