The Reformatting of DZSR Sports Radio
STARTING this week, DZSR Sports Radio underwent a massive makeover.
The government-run radio network Philippine Broadcasting Service (PBS) merged DZSR with DZRM Radyo Magasin to produce a new station, Radyo Pilipinas 2 on SR's old 918 khz frequency while shutting down the old 1278 frequency of DZRM.
A Facebook friend of mine sent me the new schedule of Radyo Pilipinas 2:
6am: Radyo Tabloid w/ Ed Satira
7am: RP News Nationwide (RP1 Simulcast)
8am: Sports 918 w/ Dennis Principe & Ria Arevalo
10am: Home EcoNanay w/ Marinela
11am: Game On: Isyu at Balita w/ Judith Caringal
12nn: RP News Nationwide (RP1 Simulcast)
1pm: Buzz Magazine w/ Rene Garcia
3pm: Sports Roundup
4pm: Isport Lang with Cecille Quimlat and Peter Lucas
5pm: Kilos Pronto (PTV Simulcast)
6pm: Talk NBA w/ JP Manosa
8pm: Post Game w/ John Mogol
9pm: PCSO Lotto
9:20pm: Music
10:00pm: Sign Off
Under this new schedule, RP2 is 70 per cent sports and 30 per cent news and information but as a long-time follower of the old Sports Radio, I think that it will take time for listeners to get used to the new format.
I was part of Sports Radio's glory years as a practicum trainee during my college days and when I graduated, I became a part-time correspondent of the station.
I even hosted a program titled Streak Shooter on DZSR which initially aired on weekdays before I was given a Sunday slot. But I eventually gave up on radio when I became a print journalist for Scoreboard Magazine and later, Bagong TIKTIK tabloid.
Under the current format of RP2, the station looks more like a sister station of Radyo Pilipinas 1 (formerly Radyo ng Bayan 738 khz) since there are newscasts that are aired simultaneous on both stations.
Despite the emergence of other stations covering sports, DZSR still continued its mission to cover smaller sports events in the name of public service. And once RP2 gets fully settled, then it will continue what SR started.
Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar wanted the merger of SR and RM as part of his efforts to unify government media, leaving PBS with two AM and two FM stations.
The new PBS FM station, FM1 on 87.5 MHZ, is set to be launched later this year.
Clearly, Sports Radio will be missed. Let's hope the new RP2 can at least continue SR's legacy.
