Sports During the US Summer Season

THE NBA season is already over, but there are still a lot of sports events that people here in the United States are looking forward to.

There is the World Cup of Football which kicks off this week in Russia. The US and Philippines both didn't qualify for the tournament but football (or soccer as it is known here in the US) is a sport that transcends a lot of international cultures which explains why it is still well-loved all over the world.

The Fox TV networks hold the US TV rights to the World Cup while ABS-CBN has the Philippine TV rights through its S+A and Liga Channels. Liga is a new channel that ABS-CBN Sports launched just this year and is seen on SkyCable Channel 86. It took over from the old Balls Channel which used to air UFC fights until it was shut down in 2015.

Another sport that keeps Americans interested during the summer is baseball. The Houston Astros are the defending World Series champions. However, not many Filipinos are interested in baseball although Fox Sports Philippines airs some MLB games occasionally.

As for the NBA, well, there is the NBA Draft on June 22 where the Phoenix Suns hold the top pick. BTV and NBA Premium will surely air the draft while S+A has not yet announced whether it will televise the event.

After the draft, the NBA teams will go to Las Vegas for the annual Summer League where the rookies are expected to show their wares before the new NBA season tips off in October.

The NBA Awards is scheduled on June 25 where the league will announce its top individual awards like the Most Valuable Player and the Rookie of the Year.

Definitely, there is still a lot of sports activity even though the NBA is on a break. And Americans do love sports even during the summer.
