What Will Happen to PTV Sports Now?

STARTING in August, government TV network People's Television 4 will air a number of Chinese shows dubbed in Tagalog as part of an agreement between the Philippines and China that will help expose Filipino viewers to Chinese culture.

One of the shows that will be affected by the entry of these Chinese shows is the popular sports newscast PTV Sports which was revived last year after it was yanked off the air for a few months in 2016. PTV Sports currently airs at 7 pm nightly but once one of the new Chinese shows airs on the 7 pm slot, PTV Sports may have to go.

PTV Sports was popular before when the controversial Snow Badua first hosted the show with his DZSR Sports Radio colleague Dennis Principe. The program, which initially aired in the afternoon before it was moved to 7 pm, had an interactive portion where the viewers can communicate with Badua and Principe through messages on Facebook and Twitter.

But a falling-out between Badua and Principe resulted in the former resigning from PTV Sports and the latter taking over as lead host, which he still does today.

Badua has since returned to writing for the sports website Spin.ph after he was banned by the PBA for his hateful tweets against league officials back in 2015. He was supposed to be the commissioner of the new basketball league MPBL but was forced to resign due to differences with league founder Manny Pacquiao.

As for PTV Sports without Badua, I heard that the show hasn't been able to regain its popularity. The current format is mostly straight sports news but many viewers have lost interest primarily because they miss Badua's fast-paced style of reporting.

With the new Chinese shows set to come in, PTV Sports may have to move to a new time slot. Perhaps it would be good if the show would be aired on a weekend since there are other sports news shows on other channels aired on weekdays like SportsCenter on ESPN5, The Score on S+A and Sports Desk on CNN Philippines.

Moving PTV Sports back to the afternoon slot is out of the question because Ben Tulfo already has that slot filled up with his programs Kilos Pronto and Ben Tulfo Unfiltered.

It's sad that the current PTV management doesn't seem interested in sports. The government channel briefly aired the games of the Philippine Football League but the coverage was often cut short whenever there was an important activity by President Duterte. The PTV of today is a far cry from its glory days in the 80s when it was the go-to channel for sports events like the PBA and the Olympics.

It will be interesting to find out if PTV Sports will be gone now that the government network is shifting its programming to be different from the private networks.
